All about fiber optic lighting November 13th, 2008
Fiber optic lighting is currently being used in several places and continues to gain recognition all across the globe with every passing day. Say for instance there are several museums that employ the usage of this sort of lighting for the illumination of the sealed display cases that hold their significant papers and sealed documents. Fiber optic lighting is a dynamic emerging technology that offers a broad range of aesthetic and problem-solving options to the lighting designer. This practical desk reference is written to serve the needs of professional lighting designers, engineers, facility managers, energy managers, and architects in applying and specifying these innovative products. Fiber optic lighting can completely alter the appearance of a pool and of an entire backyard. A splash of color such as blue, green, or purple can cause the shapes in the water to change in appearance, and they can affect the mood of all of those around the pool.

Fiber optic lighting systems mainly consist of the fiber optic illuminator, fiber optic strand and various kinds crystal light. There are two kinds of fiber optic lighting cable, one type is to send the light via the cable to the end light for lighting, the other type cable just lighting themselves. Fiber optic lighting has a shore-mounted illuminator box which has the light bulb inside it. The light shines through a rotating color wheel, as it rotates the light changes color. Fiber optic lighting is easy to install and efficient. Instead of running wires to various lights, thin durable fiber optic cables connect a projector box to each of them.
Fiber Optic lighting requires very little maintenance. The Fiber Optic cable will last for decades without any maintenance at all. Fiber optic lighting met both of these requirements. An added benefit was that fiber optic cables contain no electricity. Fiber Optic lighting is mainly used for architectural effect, both indoors and outdoors. Fiber optics can have either endglow (with the light emitted from the end of the fiber) or sideglow (with light emitted along the length of the fiber).
Fiber optic lighting provides greater aesthetic, safety, energy savings and maintenance cost benefits over conventional lighting. With the introduction of new Fiberstars EFO, the Company believes that fiber optic lighting will become a meaningful segment of the $58 billion lighting market. Fiber optic lighting, already in use in grocers like Whole Foods and Albertsons, uses 80 percent less energy than halogen lights or incandescents and generates no heat (making them ideal for grocery-store freezers). One major manufacturer, Fiberstars (www.fiberstars.com ), has plans to introduce residential fiber optic products within the next year or so.
